Bristol University UCU

The University and College Union (UCU) was formed on the 1st June 2006 by the amalgamation of the AUT (Association of University Teachers) and NATFHE (National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education).

UCU represents further and higher education lecturers, managers, researchers and many academic-related staff such as librarians, administrators and computing professionals across the UK. It currently represents around 120,000 members in universities and colleges throughout the UK.

Bristol UCU has approximately 1000 members.

Bristol UCU Executive Committee

Vice-President:       Harriet Bradley
Hon Treasurer:       Colin Lazarus
Hon Secretary:        Sue Moyers

Much of the work of the local association happens behind the scenes and isn’t often talked about. UCU may be most often thought of in terms of negotiating pay deals and improved working conditions for specific groups of staff, but much of the work done by local union volunteers focuses on representing the interests of individual members. Whether it is cases of bullying or harassment, threat of redundancy, pensions, illness, early retirement or health and safety in the workplace, local UCU reps and officers are trained to help members with problems. Often the things we help individuals with are straightforward and members simply need information.  Occasionally though, they need support and the involvement of a third party to help sort things out and sometimes we draw on the support and knowledge of full-time union officers in the regional office for their help and advice.

Please contact us if you need any support or information about your work here at the University of Bristol.  We will do everything we can to help.  Members of the committee take particular responsibility for certain tasks and the list below indicates these.  However, these are not exclusive and you can contact anyone on the list for advice or support.

Bristol University UCU has a committed and active team of Departmental Reps who are the first port of call for many members who are in difficulty.  Their contact details are on the Departmental Reps page.
